Les Gens de l’année 1990

It is the story of a little girl from a mining village, that is touched by the wand of a fairy. There was a boy called Claude François. He sang at family parties. Daddy Kaas worked very hard in the mine and Mommy Kaas raised their 7 children in Stiring-Wendel, a suburb from Forbach. No holidays at the sea, little toys, but a lot of love. DA difficult but also sweet childhood, in which they couldn’t do much. And you shouldn’t forget this childhood, because for Patricia Kaas if you forget her country, her daddy and her mommy, her 5 brothers and her sister, then you don’t understand who this little woman is. The woman who is on stage and collects golden disks and from the age of 15 attracts public from Paris to Tokyo.

For Patricia, her music is the music of dance parties. She sings at dance parties from the age of 8.

Her first pay check was a bag of fudge.

“When I sang at the beer parties, the people didn’t come to listen to me, but to drink beer and have fun. And that was difficult for me. But I learned a lot from that and that helps me nowadays. And because I sang at a young age, my vocal chords did develop well. I loved singing. Nobody forced me to do that. I did it because I wanted to do it. I wanted to be on stage”.

One night a man falls in love with her voice. It is an architect from Bitche. He wants that the people in Paris hear Patricia’s voice and give her a chance. Patricia’s mother trusts him and also the record company Phonogram.

He finds a writer, a composer and a celebrity for her. One that finds her voice fantastic: Gerard Dépardieu. It seems that the career of Patricia is going to start. But it is a false beginning.

The first single “Jalouse” doesn’t do much. Patricia takes the deception and starts again.

“After this failure I recorded “Mademoiselle chante le blues. That was in March 1987…”.

Int. : Did you say to yourself: “I was lucky?” Or “It is normal. I worked very hard for it”.

PK: I was lucky, but I also worked hard for it. I wanted to be a singer so much! My whole life there wasn’t anything else I wanted to be. And I love to work hard.

Int. : You look very serious.

PK: yes I am a very serious person; both in my life as in my work. Even more in my work. That is the way I was raised. Especially by my mother. She always said to me: “You have to fight in life. Go forward and show others that you have character”. And that is how I am. Except when I buy clothes for myself, I am not that occupied with myself.

Int. : And then earn a lot of money?

PK: That also didn’t change much. I am not going to buy expensive clothes, because I have money and I also don’t visit chic hotels or restaurants. When I am on tour I sleep in the same hotel as the band. I don’t like rich things. Because the really rich people often are very funny, when you observe them. I don’t like the fact that rich people think they are better than others, because they are rich. That is stupid and ridiculous.

Int. : What do you do with your money?

PK: I bought a car(Hinda) and I bought an apartment on credit. That is really awesome, that is true, but money doesn’t make you happy. I also was happy before I had money. It is just a bit different. That’s all. You can’t buy happiness. I live in a simple way. I don’t visit places that are fashionable, because I don’t feel well there. That is how I was raised.

Int. : Your mother played a big part in your career. You never had the idea that she projected on you her own wish to have a career?

PK: No.

Int. : Were you already well-known, when she died?

PK: She had the time to see that my success was growing, but she never saw me on stage. With my own songs. And has been very difficult for me. When I was successful, she became ill. She read the newspapers. She loved doing that and that has helped her a lot when she was ill.

Int. : And your dad?

PK: My father always said: “Patricia does what she wants to do”. Now he is proud and satisfied. He doesn’t show his joy, but if he plays jeu de boules with friends he talks about me all the time.

Int. : What do you do when you return to Stiring-Wendel?

PK: I visit my family, my father, my dog, my sister. She got a baby; he is 7 months now. His name is Geoffrey and I am his godmother! The first time that I am a godmother. For me and my family that is very important. The whole region in the east is important for me, because it is there that it all started. That gives me a lot of energy. Because the tours, the travelling, it is all very tiresome. When I have the blues I go there to get new energy again. That reminds me at the time that I was little.

Int. : Do you also throw parties?

PK: No, not really. In pubs they smoke so much and that is dangerous for my voice. My voice gave me problems twice, so now I am very careful with it.

Int. : Were you never tempted to use drugs?

PK: Never. I don’t smoke, I don’t drink; I don’t like alcohol. Once in my life I drank alcohol, vodka. In Russia that was. And I got drunk right away. And I don’t know with what I could compare a joInt. And actually I don’t care.

Int. : You give the impression that you only think of work?

PK: Yes but for me giving a concert isn’t difficult. I love doing that. I do need that.

Int. : Are there things that make you angry?

PK: Yes. For instance how people treat older people. I am very sensitive. I can give you an example of that. I was at school. I was like 11 years old, very little and I went home with the bus. A big boy spit on the back of an older person. I was so angry. I said to myself, I could go to him and that he probably would beat me up, but that has to be then. So I went to him and said what I thought of him and I even slapped him.

Int. : And then?

PK: Well he beat me up of course, but I was very proud of myself.

Int. : Do you have the impression that you make your own decisions in your life?

PK: Yes. Both in my work as in my life I take all the decisions myself. In the beginning not so much, because then I had to learn a lot. But since 2 years now I decide everything myself. For instance when I changed from record Company, that was a difficult decision, but I took the risk.

Int. : You set up your own Production Company?

PK: “Notes de blues”. They produced my 2nd album. When you have a contract it is very important that you are free, but freedom doesn’t pay. Your own producer is important for the choice of the songs. Because Record Companies always think businesslike and they don’t think of somebody’s career. I hope I can do it like this for a long time.

Int. : Your whole life?

PK: My whole life, I don’t know. I want to marry and have children. At the moment it is nice to be alone, but when I have a family then that will come ate the first place.
