“I am happy when I am alone”

After 200 concerts from Moscow to Tokyo Patricia Kaas matured. Her life, even when the big love still hasn’t been found, won’t be only about music anymore.

Mrs. Kaas, who we will see in the “Taratata” next Saturday, wants to live, live well and enjoy herself and wants to get attracted by other things than only her songs.

She opened her heart for Annick Rannou.

“I want that others think of me as a nice person. Sexy. That they will return to me without saying: “I saw you on the TV yesterday!”. That people say: “You are beautiful in black”, just like in one of my songs”.

At the age of 27 Patricia has a new goal in life: succeed in her transformation. A rebirth, that actually took place because she sang too much: “In the last tour I have grown, but I have changed. I feel that I change. In the beginning I only wanted to express my voice. I did hide behind that. I didn’t take the time to look at myself. To practice this profession? It is a miracle!

Without counting that I started in Stiring-Wendel, a little village in the Lorraine, with a big accent, I didn’t feel at ease much. I did give my all on stage. I only thought of singing and nothing else. And I worried about the length of my dress and if I should wear a mini dress….”.

But she is reassured by her 200 concerts from Moscow to Tokyo. In September she is going on stage again.

This Patricia Kaas is very emaciated since she started in the show business(“I am slim, not emaciated”). One thing she knows for sure : “I want to seduce the public, like when I was in London, where I was for 4 months to record my new album. I was surprised that some eyes were pointed at me without even knowing my name. In the studio, with the musicians, who liked me, I just was the singer. One of many. There I had no advantage”.

She knows how to please others. And she believes that that is new to her. And she is surprised that she can do that and she smiles. She confirms that her hollow cheeks, her pallor, her blond hair and the deep blue eyes remind of Marlène Dietrich. But if you really want to see who she resembles, you have to look at her family. “The older I get, the more I resemble my mother. Photos from my childhood confirm that. I have my father’s eyes. But I have the character of my mother, a woman who wanted to do things, but also was very patient. I seldom get angry. Then something really bad must happen and only when it is really important. Most of the time it happens once a year, that I really get angry”.

“I remember the first time that I was on stage. It was carnival in Forbach. All of the family went there. And somebody asked: “Who wants to perform? I raised my finger. Nobody forced me. I sang: “Sale bonhomme” from Claude François and I won a bag of fudge”.

In her parental home, rented from the mining company, her father, who speaks German and her 5 brothers and sister, Robert, Raymond, Egon, Danièle and Karine, live. At the cemetery there her mother is buried.

Patricia Kaas now lives in Paris, with her friends. She works, she travels and she is making good money. “And it isn’t right if others say that I am the prisoner of 2 people. My managers took the place of my mother. Nobody ever forced me to do an extra concert or something like that. Contrary most of the time I asked for it. It is true that I cancelled 3 of them, but that was because I had the flu. And it surprises me that people only see that, while I did 187 concerts. People even said that I took medicine like morphine etc. What a nonsense!”

Kaas is no Piaf! She isn’t born for misfortune: “People want to see me desperate. Alone, as if that is my faith. But I am happy. I chose to be alone. I like returning on my own to my apartment in Saint-German-des Prés. I am nod sad, only a bit melancholic. I haven’t been unhappy since that I lost my mother”.

She also defends the region where she was born. People say that it is gray and misty and that there are many problems. But I don’t look at that. It is a beautiful region with lots of forests.

“I also was taught certain principles. Until I was 17 I never went out without my mother, not even to the cinema. By my education I am not an “easy” woman. I only once loved somebody. When I have contact with a man, who is in love with me, I am a bit scared. I have difficulties to relax in a relationship. And my principles forbid me to go out at night, when I have a TV broadcast the next day.

At the moment I do party a bit. Life also is getting out and have a drink with friends”.

She thinks that her friends will introduce her to other friends and that one day she will fall in love again. But she also remembers what her mother told her: “You need a man that is specially made for you. You do have a difficult character, girl”.

“But if I meet that man, then I will keep that to myself. It would the easiest if it would be somebody in show business. I let faith decide that for me. But I won’t ever quit my profession for a man. Even it that means that at 50 I am alone without a child. I even go a bit further, that when my future husband would ask me to choose between him and my profession, I would leave him…”.
