Télé 7 Jours, nr. 2193, 8 June 2002

Two men and a woman walk up the stairs in Cannes, where at 26 May their movie closes the 55th Filmfestival. It is the moment everybody has waited for and they get a thunderous applause from the public. Applause that only is reserved for stars.
For her, dazzling, it is the first time. Patricia, accompanied by Jeremy Irons, her fellow actor and Claude Lelouch, the director, walk into the history of Cannes

“And now…..Ladies and Gentlemen”; that is the title of the movie. Here you can see the singer of the blues, whose dreams were realised, with your own eyes. Come onto the red carpet of the most famous Filmfestival.

The new actress doesn’t want to miss anything of this fairytale. She waves at the camera of Télé 7 Jours, turns towards the camera and makes photos herself of the photographers. She doesn’t fake this innocence. She is a little girl, that is fascinated by everything and in a flurry of innocence, while the public and the reporters from all over the world are watching, she makes photos. For her 6 brothers and sister. She is, after the death of her parents, the star.
Her family didn’t come to Cannes. From her parental house in Forbach, in the northeast of France, it is too far to Cannes.

The public at the promenade displace themselves to see something and a young girl shouts: “Patricia”.
Patricia says to Jeremy Irons: “Come Jeremy, lets go to her and say hello”.
That night. After she played with a lot of enthusiasm Marlène in front of the photographer, she is going to bed early. “I want to feel good tomorrow. After the demonstration of the movie I am going to party all night!”.

And the next morning, in a limousine, that drives her to the palace, Patricia looks at the sky and says: “I am sure that my mother from above encourages me. It would have been so fantastic if she could have seen this”.

Because in the beginning in 1979, in a cabaret in Saarbrücken, it was the music and the songs about love that brought her here. “When Claude Lelouch contacted me, I didn’t believe that. I went to the appointment out of respect for him and not because I was hoping to get a role”, she says. “We did some tests and I thought that was really difficult. And then he called me and said: “You are Jane”. “I asked 3 days to think it over.” But the woman that sings the blues don’t doubt, because the movie fits her very well.
With the movie “And now….Ladies and Gentlemen” she has created something that she will cherish for a long time.

She also made a new album, Piano Bar, with songs for which the music was made by Michel Legrand. The words were made by Paul Ives and Borus Bergman and the album contains a couple of French songs with a high quality. From Charles Trenet till Gilbert Bécaud. And a beautiful version of “Mon Homme”.
“I couldn’t do “Ne me quitte pas” from Jacques Brel just like that. That is why I sing it in English. I tried to create a calm and quiet atmosphere, like in the first albums from Sade.

But confronted with the whole crew of the movie she feels very little. The 14 million albums, that she has sold and the 600 concerts that she did and that let her travel through 5 continents, don’t change that.
Claude Lelouch was surely able to hush the doubts of the beginning comedian. Patricia Kaas became his muse, like in other times the music of “Un homme et une femme” supported his movie.

Patricia only has intense and happy memories of the movie. The magical decors from Essaouira and from Fez in Morocco, her role as singer in a bar, victim of amnesia, in love with a gentleman thief, that was played very convincingly by Jeremy Irons.
“With Jeremy I share a big complexity. I have found a new family”.

Will she be ignited by the film virus? “I have become more confident”, she says.
“Thanks to Claude I feel more free. I don’t want to act too exaggerated, like you sometimes see in a theatre. I just let it go. I had every faith in it. I also never wanted to read the newspapers about it. I was afraid for that. I am a too big perfectionist.

The Moroccan tradition says that a pilgrimage to the tomb of the healer Lalla Chaffia can enlighten your complaints and why not. The heroin suffers from amnesia.
“I wanted to descend in the tomb and then ascend again without stopping. I was completely blue, but I did it ok. You can’t fool Claude. The most important thing for me was to not disappoint him. Mission accomplished”.

And a dream came true, even if she hasn’t met George Clooney yet!
Patricia is now invited in another palace; that of a prince from Saudi Arabia, who wants to show the voice of this little French woman to hundreds of his guests.
