TV Hebdo, Dec. 2003

Loyal to certain charity events Mrs. Kaas returns with a new album. The surprise: Renaud and Cabrel participated on the album.
Almost as a tourist Patricia Kaas returns to Paris. At the moment she lives in a beautiful house in Zurich. The singer, who travels a lot, lives there since 2 years.
She returns with “Sexe Fort”, a beautiful album, where apart from the very loyal Jean-Jacques Goldman for the very first time Renaud and Francis Cabrel participate. And the lyrics are from Julien Clerc. And also lets not forget the duet with Stephan Eicher. A singer in optima forma.

Int. : You participate on the Restos du Coeur(Enfoirés) and Téléthon. Don’t you think that sometimes too much and too often they ask the same artists?
PK: This is the 13th year that I participate. That’s correct. But what I want to say is, that we do it for a good cause, but it is also a party for the artists. It is, just like Téléthon, an emission well made. And overall these are goals that really move me.
Of course I am sensitive to the battle against cancer, since my mother had that too and she died of it. Everybody should be moved by this. And the Téléthon concerns children, that suffer and if you can do something, you should do that!

Int. : What is your role in it?
PK: The most important thing is to raise money for research. It is a lengthy broadcast with lots of reportages that are pretty penetrating. And I am there to lighten it up a bit; now and then a smile. That’s all.

Int. : Is “Sexe Fort” meant to pick on men?
PK: Oh no! I just want to show, that despite the image people have of me, I do have a very strong side. On stage with songs like “Rien ne ’s arrête” or “Je voudrais la connaître” it is difficult to leave behind that impression. For my future performances on TV I want to amuse myself with wearing tattoos on my belly and my armes. To play a little with that image.
Because I am the one that takes the decisions in my life; that is why I took lyrics that are very direct. Just like the music. If you are 25 as a woman you want to believe in prince charming. But when you 35 that doesn’t fit anymore. That is why I changed some words in “Je ne veut plus te pardonner”, to evade that is was too romantic.

Int. : Should we despair the men, like you sing in “Ou sont les hommes?”.
PK: It isn’t about a man that laughs when he touches a woman. Above all I want to talk about being human. It is true that the lyrics calls for something. The men that hesitate to express his feelings; men that are afraid to cry. But I don’t mean they have to cry all the time. That would be really tiresome!

Int. : The power that you claim to have, is that an inheritance of your education?
PK: It is true, that when I was a child, I saw my father returning from the mine, totally exhausted and that my mother not always had the easy life to raise all her children. And I wouldn’t have had the drive to become successfull, if my mother didn’t have to battle against an illness. But from when I was 20 I had to make my own decisions, had to learn to be independant. If you encounter difficult things you can go for it or fight.

Int. : So it is due to your life, that you are a bit fateful?
PK: It is true that there are a couple of songs on my album in which I ask many questions. I have the feeling that when you loose someone that is dear to you, you often feel guilty. You ask yourself, if you have done enough. You are searching for the background and there isn’t any. Life is in fact like that.

Int. : For the First time Cabrel writes a songs for somebody else. Who eventually decided that?
PK: We decided that when we spoke with each other! But for Francis it is without a doubt difficult to find words that will be sung by somebody else than himself. He got the song lied “Peut-être, peut-être” from a young writer and he adapted that thinking of me.

Int. : The other surprise was Renaud, who wrote “La nuit est mauve”.
PK: The ultimate lovesong! It wasn’t released before because I worked with the band of Goldman. But because he is a friend of François Bernheim, one of my old coworkers, he decided to write the lyrics together with him. He also had the song “La fille slave”, that tells the story about young Russian women that work in the prostitution in France, but the title resembles “La Fille de L’est” , that was made for me by Jean-Jeacques, too much.

Int. : In “L’Abbé Caillou, a hommage to the abbot Pierre, written by Pascal Obispo, aren’t you a bit too ironic about Bernard Kouchner, when you sing about “Doctor without complexes/the whole year tanned”?
PK: Honestly when I read the text I didn’t think that the text was pretty judicial about his meeting with the pope. Above all I wanted to honour the abbot Pierre, a bishop who really moves me, close to the people. ..I met him in 1985 in Switzerland, at one of the TV premières with Robert Hossein and I was so scared, that I couldn’t say a word. The pope does have a very wordly appearance and I didn’t attack him. The abbot Pierre is much more natural.

Int. : Is religion important for you?
PK: I have a difficult relationship with religion. Because I lost my parents at an early age. While I would have loved to have them around me. So God isn’t very important for me.

Int. : A lot of songs are about dreams. Are dreams important for you?
PK: In a world, where women are beaten, in which there is so much misery, without even talking about the war in the Middle-East, the disasters in nature etc. fortunately there still are dreams, rigth or wrong?

Int. : You live in Zurich. Is that because there you are far away from the paparazzi and you have to pay less tax?
PK: (Smiles). I sold my apartment in Paris, when my relationship, that I had for 6 years, was over. And I decided to leave to be able to pick up my life as a woman in a quiet way.
Even if it sometimes nice to be recognised. The people in Zurich respect you and you never feel spied upon. And this Swiss town allows me to combine my 2 cultures, the German and the French life. And being on the move is also part of my life.
