Paru Vendu, nr.17, 13 Jan. 2005

“My biggest success? That I am always there!”
After having travelled a lot of miles for a successful tour the singer from the Lorraine returns to the Zénith in Paris on 21 and 22 January.
We had the possibility to have an interview with her; one in which she talks very frank with us.

Int. : You return to Paris, to the Zénith, after a successful tour. How do you explain your success?
PK: You can never explain that completely. The public already loves me for so many years. There is a loving connection, that we build during all those years. People do recognise themselves in my songs and in my past.

Int. : This concert is different from the others, more rock, more intimate and the design is a bit more barren… although it shows better who you actually are. It is very different from the structured show that you did for “Dans ma chair”.
PK: That is all for a reason. I wanted less fringe, less unnecessary things, but not to be sterile and you will find my complete world in it. It is more me.

Int. : Indeed. Because in the show “Dans ma chair” you came with heavy artillery and it seemed that you was really looking for yourself.
PK: You know me well(laughs). That is so true. That show was also very difficult to put on stage every time and it was indeed a period in my life, that I was searching.

Int. : Nowadays you see a certain feeling of security. You seem stronger. Your album therefore of course has the title “Sexe Fort”.
PK: I do feel strong, because I am an individualist; I go from within me. And I am a strong woman for sure. That is right for 100%, but I am especially a woman that has the opportunity to be on stage and express herself. And I became so much stronger, because at a young age I lost my parents and my brother. That is a year ago now. So I had to become independant and fight.

Int. : But not completely independant, because seldom an album has been released on which so many composers contributed. Like Jean-Jacques Goldman, Pascal Obispo, Stéphan Eicher, Etienne Roda-Gill, Francis Cabrel. And in your First single you then ask: “Ou sont les hommes? “.
I would like to answer: “They are on your album”.
PK: At first I was very surprised too, that everybody wanted to write for me. After a career of 15 years there are still doubts, especially because there are broadcasts like “Star Academy”, which deliver a lot of young artists. And that there are then so many people that want to write for me, that is a beautiful present! I am very lucky!

Int. : “Sexe Fort” is about real life, your life. That of a woman of 37, about her femininity, what she thinks about love and her whims.
PK: it fits me perfectly. In the beginning of my career it was important to present my voice. People know that know. At the moment I am in peace with myself. With this album I wanted to surprise people. The lyrics are more punchy.

Int. : When you are on stage you can feel that.
PK: The writers and composers told me that I especially brought to the surface their feelings. In the beginning we didn’t plan to do rock; we just wanted to create something rough and forceful.

Int. : Now you are well-known, do you still want to surprise others?
PK: I always want to surpise myself before I surprise others.

Int. : Your previous album, “Piano Bar”, in english, didn’t do so well compared to the others. Are you afraid of losing fans?
PK: I experienced that disappontment before. I wondered if my public understood me; if they could love the side of my character that I expressed then. A character that only the true fans know.
I have the impression that I sang a lot about emotions. From now on I also want to sing about other feelings. Feelings that are more autobiographic and that reflect what I feel at the moment.

Int. : One of the songs contain the words: “The keys to happiness”. What are your keys to happiness?
PK: For me it is very important to feel free; that you are no prisoner in a relationship. I belong to nobody. I am a free woman. I really need that.

Int. : For this album Pascal Obispo wrote a song as a hommage to abbot Pierre. A man who like you is very much loved with the French public. Your impression?
PK: I am flattered and motivated by it that I got that award. I do then feel that I am alive. That means that I am always there.

Int. : You performed at “Star Academy”. What do you think about these coming artists; you that started in bars and at party nights?
PK: If this broadcast achieves that young people meet, then that is fine. The other side of the medal is the whole stardom. From some artists they will say that they are very good. The fall after that will be so much harder. What surprises me is, that the whole promotion around them doesn’t provide a stage for them on which they can perform.
Anyway my success is that I always was there for the last 15 years.
